Violent Extremism Social Media Peace and Security Terrorism

The kick-off to the thirteenth seminar was a presentation addressing the connection between ‘extremism’, ‘terrorism’ and ‘social media’. It started by citing the following statement made by Ayman Al-Zawahiri, that is “We are in a battle, and more of this battle is taking place in the battlefield of the media.” It is indisputable that certain violent extremist and terrorist groups have developed a sophisticated propaganda machinery; especially in respect to communications on the Internet and social media platforms.
