Syria’s revolution was a defining moment in changing the traditional role for women in society. Although women were part of the professional workforce in Syria prior to the revolution, the patriarchal social environment prevented many from achieving leadership roles within their professions. Likewise, many women would leave their professions upon marriage and the start of a family to take up household responsibilities.
